Before You Replace That Garbage Disposal....

It never fails...you learn something new everyday.  Some of you may know about this, others if you are like me don't.

Last week we had a party at my house for my little one and sure enough..smack in the middle of preparing food, my Garbage Disposal quit working.  It would Buzz, so I know that it was getting electricity.  I fished out some stuff that I thought may have it clogged...no luck.  I was set to replace it this weekend.

Well, while at a walk-thru with one of my clients last week for new construction the Builder showed my client where the KEY was for the Garbage Disposal

WHAT?!!?  There is a KEY for the Garbage Disposal?

Sure enough.  If your Garbage Disposal gets stuck there is a KEY you can buy for about $2.00 at the Hardware Store.  If you stick it in the hole on the bottom (after unplugging it) and turn it, you can jar loose whatever is stuck.

IT WORKS!  For $2.05 I fixed my Garbage Disposal today.  So, don't rush to replace your Garbage Disposal.  Try to un-stick it first.  It saves a lot of $$$$.

Wow, I learn something new every day!! Thanks for the post, this could save all of us someday at a home inspection.

Stephanie, Yeah, I knew that, but you aren't alone.

I had a seller that didn't. At the listing appointment they asked if they had to replace a garbage disposal that doesn't work. Apparently, they hadn't used it in years because it just made a humming sound. I did exactly what you said above and Shazam! it worked. The owners were amazed. that was all it took?!

PS I got the listing... ;-)

Stephanie, never heard of that.  I usually just hit the reset button on the side or bottom. Thanks I'll try this next time, my reset doesn't work.

Mine has a reset button on it also, so you made need to hit the reset button to get it going again

Hi Jeff,  That is exactly what I thought.  I was so amazed.

Hey Phillip,  Of course you got the listing!  You already saved them money.  That's awesome.

Hey Missy,  I don't know if my reset button works...it was just stuck.  :)

Hi Rick,  the reset button won't work if it is stuck with something.  I tried that...several times.  :)  Thanks.

Yeah...it's good advice!!  You can also use an allen wrench...is that how you spell it?!?!

Hey Susie,  LOL.  I don't know how to spell it...but I could see how it could work.  I think the key would be easier and less bulky though.  :)

Stephanie, I think my husband had to deal with that once and he took care of it Susie's way (I am not going to spell it out, because I am not sure of the spelling either).

Well, I don't think that will fix my leaky one. But I have 'unstuck' many disposals to the delight of my friends and family who think I am Mr. Fixit.

Hi Mana,  That's good to know.  I wonder how it is spelled.  I may have to find out.

Hey Sally,  You have the ability to do both.

Hi Tom,  Mine leaked also...small hole in the side of it.   I have no idea why but I cut the end of a screw off,   put some plumbing tape around it and stuck it in the hole. Works like a champ and no leak.  :)

I don't even use mine - less for the water treatment plant to deal with - I put all scraps in the trash can and take it outside to the larger garbage immediately so there is no leftover food in the house (generally there is none anyway)

Steph~

This may surprise you...since we have many septic systems in our area, many homes simply do NOT have garbage disposals.

Stephanie - I'm surprised many do not know about the key - I have actually used an allen wrench(the right size of course) and bingo - it works!

Hi Jason,  it saved me a whole lot of money.  :)

Julie,  LOL.  :)  That's funny.

Hey Matt, You're welcome.  Glad it helped.

Hey Chris,  I was going to....I figured that I was not alone.

Hi Thesa,  Glad the reset button helps.

Hi Tom,  sounds good.  If you are like me....I don't like to spend money.

Hi Barbara Jo,  That's a good idea.  I don't use it very much....especially with meat, fruits and veggies.

Hi janeAnne!  Glad to see you back.  It is actually code here that if a home has septic...it can't have a garbage disposal.  It is not good for the system AT ALL.  If the home was built prior to that code....we all recommend not to use it.  Septic systems are really temperamental sometimes.  :)

Hey Paula,  I had never heard of it!!!  I don't know why, just hadn't.  I'm glad that you did.  :)

Hi Katerina,  LOL.  I don't know how old mine is but I don't think it's too old.  Sounds like you got a heavy duty one!
